DIY Troubleshooting Tips for Your HVAC System
Before scheduling a service call, there are a few simple things you can check to potentially resolve common heating and cooling issues. At Rhymes Heating & Cooling, we’re always here to help—but sometimes a quick inspection can save you time and get your system back up and running faster. Use the tips below to troubleshoot your system safely before giving us a call.
No Cooling
Check that both the indoor and outdoor units are powered on and running. If not, there may be a power issue—inspect your circuit breaker.
If both units are running, focus on airflow:
- Is the indoor air filter clean?
- Is the outdoor coil free of dirt and debris?
Restricted airflow—indoors or outdoors—can prevent proper cooling performance.
If the outdoor unit is running, check the refrigerant lines for ice or frost. If you see any:
- Turn the system off at the thermostat
- Switch the fan to the “on” position to help thaw the system
If you notice ice buildup, strange noises, or your system still isn’t cooling after these steps, it’s time to have it professionally evaluated.
No Heat
For gas furnaces, check that other gas appliances (like your stove, dryer, or water heater) are working to rule out a gas supply issue.
Inspect your air filter—restricted airflow can impact heating performance.
For heat pumps, follow the same troubleshooting steps listed under “No Cooling.”
For electric heat, check if the airflow is lukewarm or not warm at all. Electric systems can be affected by airflow restrictions, so be sure the filter is clean.
Filter Selection Tips
For systems using a 1" filter, we recommend not exceeding a MERV 8 rating, as higher ratings can restrict airflow.
If you’re interested in higher filtration, ask us about upgrading to a 4–6" thick filter system, which allows for better airflow while supporting more effective filtration.
